How to handle carrier bag costs at the till

With the introduction this week of the new law on charging for carrier bags here at Futura we have had a number of support calls asking how best to manage this at the point of sale.

You have two options available to you;

1. Create carrier bags as items.

Create an item in your item screen and then goods in bag stock to avoid negative stock levels.

This option allows you to capture the bag sales quickly at the POS by either setting up a hot key on-screen or having a barcode for the bags at the till point.

Advantages of this method are;

  • The price will automatically be populated
  • The time to process the transaction is fast
  • The stock of the carrier bags can now be monitored and potentially replenished automatically via your Futura Stock control system.

2.   Create a Product Group

This is the alternative if you prefer not to have to manage stock for carrier bags.

By creating a new Product Group (PGR)- ‘Bags’ the cashier can then capture the value of the bags in a product group sale.

Advantages of this method are;

  • No need to goods in stock
  • Stock levels will be cleared down automatically by the system periodically.

Disadvantages are;

  • Allowing staff to perform product group sales is always potentially open to abuse, in theory any item could be mis-sold in this way.
  • The cashier will have to manually enter a value for bags on every transaction which is a slower process and may incur a degree of user error.
